"I have found the school excellent in drawing out the real talents of the students as individuals whether these be academic, sporting, musical or in areas like leadership and compassion. These talents are all important and need room to grow." Parent
At Ampleforth we believe that true education is about the whole person. Intellectual development and commitment to academic excellence will always be at the heart of our approach, but both at the College and at our prep school, St. Martin's Ampleforth, we understand that education means much more than this. It must also address the spiritual, religious, moral, social and physical development of the girls and boys in our care. Benedictine tradition has always stressed the importance of the right balance between prayer, study, education and recreation in everyday life.
The curriculum is broad and includes a wide range of subjects including Drama, Computer Science and Classics. This is a school where the ablest perform outstandingly well. But this is not a hot-house with its intake restricted to a narrow band of ability. The world for which we prepare our students is a diverse and richly varied one.
Nevertheless, typically 8% of our students secure places at Oxford and Cambridge each year. We are the only school in the North of England to have a SAT programme. Ampleforth is preparing an increasing number of students for US universities. With more now taking up places at universities overseas and almost 70% gaining places at Sutton Group top 30 UK universities, the school's ability to add value at A level (top 7%), has opened up an increasing range of undergraduate options.
At Ampleforth our students learn early that each individual has a unique value and worth, and that each may enhance the life of their community through the gift of their talents or qualities. Excellence in Music, Art, Drama and Sport as well as CCF, country sports and outdoor education provide multiple opportunities to meet the needs and passions of every child.
Having welcomed girls for well over a decade, Ampleforth has its own take on the single-sex or mixed school debate. Classes and activities are mixed but we recognise different tastes in sports for boys and girls and have recently introduced dance and riding. Boarding houses are single sex. This setting promotes strong bonds of friendship and in a boarding school which is genuinely seven days a week, each house creates a homely atmosphere and a powerful sense of belonging.
'Ampleforth has been a wonderful home away from home for our daughter, who has blossomed, and we thank you for it.'
An Ampleforth education gives girls and boys a 'compass for life'. The full boarding means busy weekends for everyone and there is no cultural reset needed on Monday mornings. Ampleforth is a home and a community set in its own valley of outstanding beauty. Being an Amplefordian means life-long friendships across the globe and always having a place to come home to in rural Yorkshire.
"Thank you all for helping our boys grow into amazing young men, we will never be able to repay you!"
