Sedbergh School

Sedbergh School is a co-educational full boarding school for pupils aged 13 to 18. Founded in 1525 by the Provost of Eton, we are located in the Yorkshire Dales and are proud of our impressive history, excellent facilities and a host of famous alumni – from a Lord Mayor of London and a Lord Chief Justice to adventurers, BAFTA winning screen-writers and philanthropists, and international sports men and women. An HMC member school, rated highly by both the Good Schools Guide and Which? Guide to Independent Schools, and as Outstanding at pastoral provision by ISI, our pupils expect to move on to leading universities and the School's Music, Sport and Drama is among the best in the country.

The school's unique features – from its spectacular and dynamic location, to its outstanding level of pastoral care and commitment to nurturing individual talents and aspirations – help all pupils to become spirited, well-rounded young adults with the confidence to make the most of life. The school is thriving, with its biggest pupil roll of 520 in nearly a 500-year history. Casterton, Sedbergh Preparatory School, including The Mulberry Bush Nursery, is situated just 12 miles away and has 200 pupils aged 4 to 13.

Nine boarding Houses create the backbone of the school where our community is nurtured and values passed from one generation to the next. The House is a special environment where leadership, loyalty and laughter happen. It is family for pupils when they are here, and also when they are away or have left. The camaraderie and support offered spans year groups and a first class prefecting system ensures that younger children are supported by older pupils. Tutoring remains within the house and staff feel as much a sense of belonging as the pupils. Each House has its own personality, emblem, culture and ethos; much like the collegiate system still observed within many of our famous British universities.

We agree that the purpose of education is the making of the adult, the formation of the individual. More than that, it is equipping the individual to make him or herself. It is about learning to be yourself, and more than you thought you could be. This is the essence of Sedbergh. Our pupils are presented with an unrivalled breadth of challenges as individuals and in teams, and their collective response is a wholehearted embrace of these opportunities.

The same climate of confidence and commitment exists in our classrooms where teachers of the highest calibre act as intellectual role models rather than mere academic pathfinders. Intellectual challenge is coupled with courtesy so that every opinion is considered for what it is worth. We offer an extensive outreach programme and a dedicated Oxbridge scholars programme, which we call Nine Star, and typically the School has numerous pupils in national orchestras, choirs, equestrian teams, sailing teams and in international teams for Shooting, Rugby, Netball and Lacrosse.

Sedberghians are proud of their identity and the intensity of experience that binds us together transforms achievement from a gift bestowed by others into a habit for life. This is how Sedberghians alter the trajectory of their lives. This is how we create a climate of success. This is what makes Sedbergh special.

Parents can visit Sedbergh School at any time by arrangement, and we offer bespoke boarding tasters, which include an overnight stay. The Prep school offers formal open days each term.
