Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls

Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls is one of the UK's top independent boarding and day schools offering a nurturing and aspirational environment. Filled with energy and happiness, there is a sense that pupils can achieve extraordinary things with the support and encouragement of staff and fellow pupils. Light, welcoming buildings create an inspiring home from home where learning comes naturally.

Outstanding results enable virtually all of its pupils to gain access to their first choice university, with an average of 65% going to Russell Group Universities. Girls go on to pursue careers as diverse as medicine, law, engineering, business, sport and the arts. Last year, 52.6% of girls achieved A* – A grades – more than double the national average of 26%. This year, Wales' schools inspectors, Estyn, rated HMSG as excellent in every category. Past pupils include broadcasters, politicians, musicians, medics and entrepreneurs.

The School is renowned for balancing strong academic performance with co-curricular activities like sport, music, drama and outward bound pursuits. HMSG is unusual in that it offers all the advantages of single sex education with close links with its brother school, Monmouth, enabling joint boarders' activities, joint drama, trips and a coordinated sixth form timetable delivering 30 A level subjects.

Founded in 1892 and set in beautiful countryside on the border of Wales and England, the School is nationally renowned for its sporting and musical achievements as well as its high academic standards.

Sport plays a central role in school life, both for girls who excel in HMSG's wide range of sports and for those who are less gifted but no less enthusiastic. The quality of coaching is of the highest order with the majority of coaches themselves being performers and coaches at national and international level. Every girl is able to get the most out of whichever sport attracts her, and take full advantage of HMSG's state-of-the-art facilities, whether she is simply a keen amateur or an elite talent. Pupils past and present have achieved international recognition across a variety of sports and HMSG currently has 10 international sports women on roll.

Music plays an equally rich and important role in the life of the School and girls are encouraged to take up instruments, join orchestras and ensembles, sing and perform. HMSG possesses a talented team of instrumental and singing teachers, providing tuition for a large proportion of the girls. There are many opportunities to shine and every girl has the chance to gain experience in performing; there are high profile formal concerts as well as more relaxed ones aimed at less experienced musicians.

Over 30% of pupils are boarders, of which 65% are British, and boarders play an integral part of the School community. The aim is to ensure that everyone feels welcome and supported and that all girls have an opportunity to contribute to boarding life.

Voted eighth best place to live in the UK by The Sunday Times, Monmouth is a very pretty Georgian market town surrounded by open countryside and rolling hills, but with an array of shops, cafes, a cinema and theatres.

At the beginning and end of each term, accompanied coach, minibus and taxi transport is provided to and from Heathrow airport as well as Birmingham and Bristol airports upon request.
