St Mary's Calne is a boarding and day school for around 350 girls aged 11–18. Approximately 80% of the girls board and it is a rich boarding life with all girls taking part in the full-curriculum and extra-curricular activities on offer.
OUTSTANDING PASTORAL CARE
St Mary's is renowned for its outstanding pastoral care. The school has a close and caring community where every girl is known and cared for as an individual. Every girl has a Tutor to support and guide her through every aspect of school life; from organisational skills and subject choices through to university application.
All girls go on to higher education, and the new purpose-built Sixth Form Centre, a tailor-made lecture programme, a women in corporate culture conference, debating competitions, careers advice, leadership roles and much more prepare the girls for university and beyond. Different opportunities give the Sixth Form girls independence, yet they remain an integral part of the school and are fantastic role models for the younger girls.
St Mary's is committed to providing an education that will challenge and inspire its pupils, as well as helping them to achieve outstanding public examination results. In 2017, 25% of A Level entries were graded A*, 70% A*-A and 93% A*-B. 90% of the girls secured their first choice of university and went on to study at a range of leading Russell Group universities including: Oxford, Cambridge, Cardiff, Birmingham, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Imperial, LSE, Manchester, Newcastle, Southampton and Warwick. At GCSE Level, 2017 saw record-breaking results, with an outstanding 62% of all entries graded A*. St Mary’s Calne also ranks in top 4% of schools in England for ‘value added’ scores - well above the national average.
Beyond the classroom
80% of girls play musical instruments and take part in a wide variety of ensembles, including the renowned Chamber Choir, which has enjoyed Choir Tours to Paris and also featured in a live radio broadcast of BBC Radio 4’s Daily Service; the girls are also looking forward to a Music Tour to Poland in July 2018. Drama productions in the purpose-built theatre are of the highest standard and have transferred to the London stage. The Drama Department has a unique relationship with RADA, which includes offering a course in advanced communication skills in Year 13 . All girls work for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award, with large numbers going on to higher levels. The girls also perform exceptionally well in the Young Enterprise Programme, winning the Regional final in 2017 and progressing to the National Final in London.
In sport, St Mary's Calne is a force to be reckoned with. The school is represented at county level in several major sports, nationally in athletics and lacrosse, and internationally in horse riding, with all girls taking advantage of the on-site fitness suite and 25-metre indoor pool. A new Sports Complex is currently being built and will be complete in April 2018.
It is the individualised approach to every aspect of school life that makes St Mary's Calne special.
