Godolphin School, Salisbury
Godolphin School, one of the oldest girls' boarding schools in England, founded in 1726 by Lady Elizabeth Godolphin, is situated in the cathedral city of Salisbury. The school, which educates girls from 3 – 18 across three separate yet inter-linked sites, is located an hour and a half from London by train and less than an hour and a half by road from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
The school feels proud of its long and distinguished heritage. But that does not mean we rest on our laurels – the school has developed hugely in recent years and continues to do so. We are passionate about educating girls for the 21st century and equipping them with the skills, aptitude and adaptability they will need to cope in a very modern, fast paced, global society.
Schools are naturally judged in part by their academic results but what is important at Godolphin is that we do the absolute best by the girls that we have regardless of their ability. A Godolphin girl may be extremely able and be challenged and stretched in the classroom and through academic enrichment. A Godolphin girl may also be someone who does not find academic work easy. Here too we can help and support as appropriate. This is a nurturing school that brings out the very best in its pupils whatever their starting point.
A Godolphin education is about breadth of opportunity and is centred wholly on the individual. A good school will channel a pupil's energy, curiosity and creativity and that is what we absolutely strive to do here both in the classroom and through an extensive co-curricular programme.
This is fundamentally an extremely happy school with a strong sense of community and a commitment to providing first class pastoral care. Boarders and day girls rub shoulders in the same houses and there is a huge team and network of support in place here should a girl need it. Above all else the environment at Godolphin is purposeful and dynamic. The girls speak for themselves – happy, motivated individuals who do the school real credit.
Godolphin offers boarding in three distinct phases:
• Junior boarding for girls aged 7 – 11
• Senior boarding for girls aged 11 – 16
• Sixth Form boarding for girls aged 16 – 18
The junior and senior boarding houses provide the girls with a bright and vibrant base where they are cared for by an experienced team consisting of housemistresses, tutors and pastoral staff. The Sixth Form Centre is made up of two houses which encourage the girls to become more independent. The Sixth Form team are compassionate and caring and the centre includes facilities such as dedicated IT suites, conference rooms, relaxation suites and the Sixth Form Centre Café.
Centre of excellence
Godolphin has become recognised as a centre of excellence with national success in music, sport and art. Academically the girls are challenged to reach their highest potential achieving optimum academic results.
The strong academic ethos at Godolphin is complemented by a diverse co-curricular programme knows as Godolphin Plus. This offers age appropriate activities through Godolphin Prep Plus, Godolphin Junior Plus and Godolphin Senior Plus.
Elizabeth Godolphin Award
Lady Elizabeth Godolphin, the founder of the school, was a woman of energy, tenacity and vision. The EGA Award is a two-year programme available to girls studying their A-levels at Godolphin and has been designed to offer girls an extension to their academic education.
Godolphin Head, Mrs Emma Hattersley, said at the launch of the award "it is the duty of all schools to academically educate their girls, but it is our responsibility here at Godolphin to honour the vision of our founder and produce girls with the energy, tenacity and experience beyond the classroom which they will gain through this programme."
Mrs Hattersley, and Miss Julia Miller, Head of Godolphin Prep school, are both passionate about boarding and they are supported by an experienced and energetic team, all of whom work towards ensuring the school's mission statement is achieved:
"Godolphin provides an enriching and challenging education with a strong community, enabling each girl to fulfil her potential and embrace her future with confidence."
