Why Haileybury? Haileybury is a leading co-educational boarding and day school located within easy reach of the capital, between London and Cambridge, in 500 acres of beautiful Hertfordshire countryside. The spectacular grounds are home to outstanding facilities, excellent teaching and superb pastoral care for our community of 770 boarding and day pupils.
Founded in 1862, Haileybury is proud of its history, tradition, community and values, taking the best from the past while looking to the future. Academic rigour and outstanding co-curricular provision are at the heart of the school, providing the exceptional opportunities and truly all-round education that allow our pupils to discover enduring passions and talents. Haileyburians leave as confident, tolerant and ambitious individuals who are leaders and life-long learners and who can make a difference in the world beyond school.
Distinctive academic provision Haileybury is a Top 100 Independent School (The Independent, Jan 2013). The school offers a dedicated Lower School (Years 7 and 8), a unique Year 9 curriculum, a wide range of GCSE and IGCSEs and the choice of IB Diploma or A Levels in the Sixth Form. We have taught the IB Diploma for 15 years and were placed 4th in The Times league table for IB schools in Autumn 2012. The average IB score of Haileybury IB pupils is 39, with a number of pupils securing the maximum possible 45 points (among fewer than 200 pupils to achieve this globally).
Boarding and day Children may join at 11+, 13+ or 16+. Flexi-boarding is available in Lower School (Years 7 and 8) allowing families this option without committing to full boarding early in a child’s senior school career. From Removes (Year 9) onwards, full boarding is offered with the additional flexibility of pupils being able (if they so wish) to return home on Saturday evenings. The majority of our pupils are full boarders and boarding numbers continue to rise. The Master, Joe Davies, attributes this to the fact that the College provides its boarders with a truly fulfilling and happy experience.
The choice and range of opportunities pupils have at Haileybury is enormous, be it in the arts, sport, activities or clubs: sailing, rowing, horse-riding, rugby (our new Director of Rugby is the former Wales captain Michael Owen), football, hockey (with our new second all-weather surface we have excellent facilities), lacrosse, netball, swimming, CCF, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Model United Nations, charity and community action and much more is on offer. Pupils benefit from professional sports coaches and the school regularly hosts world-class speakers and performers from the arts, sporting and academic worlds. Music at Haileybury is exceptional, with over 30 concerts, recitals and public performances each year and more than 30 visiting specialists teaching hundreds of instrumental lessons every week.
A warm welcome The school has a busy programme of events and family activities throughout the year. We warmly invite you to visit to discover what life at Haileybury has to offer and why your child will flourish here.
