Tatler Schools' Guide 2015: 'An inspiring place' Gordon Brown MP, on a visit in 2014: 'One of the great schools in the country' Most recent ISI report (2011): 'Highgate School provides an exceptional education'
Highgate, an architecturally stunning co-ed day school in a North London village, celebrates its 450th birthday this year – and, in August, the celebrations went up a notch as the school had news of its record A Level and GCSE results. Among our leaving sixth formers, a third of all grades awarded were A* and 75% were A* or A, meaning that the vast majority are now looking forward to beginning the university courses that they had set their hearts on. This is a source of great delight and pride to the staff and Head, Adam Pettitt – but not by any means the only source. Highgate takes tremendous pride in all the unexamined stuff, too. As Mr Pettitt says, 'It is wonderful to see the school recognised not just for its intellectual excellence but as a community of creative, open-minded individuals'.
The infectious pleasure a teacher inspires in their subject, the extra-curricular pursuit of curiosity – be it about bee-keeping or feminist society – and the flourishing of an environment in which children feel safe and in which they develop a sense of community, looking outwards and engaging with people and projects far beyond the school's walls. These all contribute to the ethos of a school which wants above all else, to see its leavers embark on the next stage of their lives equipped academically and mentally for the rigours of university, with a sense of adventuring, a sense of open-mindedness and a sense of thoughtfulness.
A brand new Junior School building will open shortly, joining the state-of-the-art senior school Library and refurbished Chapel in the list of recent architectural developments. The school has recently rolled out new e-learning platforms, is introducing iPads as an educational tool and has an established and bespoke 'knowledge curriculum' – an interdisciplinary course designed to help join up pupils' historical, cultural and scientific knowledge. Our school choir won the 2014 BBC Songs of Praise competition; we recently staged a breathtaking production of West Side Story at the RADA theatre in central London; and hold an annual summer arts festival, which this year culminated at Camden's Roundhouse.
Admissions Highgate is actually three schools in one: the Pre-Preparatory School (ages 3-7) and the Junior School (ages 7-11), each with its own Principal, and the Senior School (ages 11-18). Girls and boys in roughly equal numbers are admitted at 3+, 7+, 11+ and 16+ from a diverse range of backgrounds and schools, both state and independent, throughout North London and further afield; arrangements for entry at 13 have changed – talk to our Admissions Office for details.
We provide means-tested bursaries (assisted places) and music scholarships at 11+ and 16+ and honorary academic scholarships, internally awarded.
